Prospering
Hello Everyone
When you go to school, your teachers tell you to study hard and when you get good qualifications you can get a good job.
This is true.
But there are a lot of other things that will help you to prosper in life too.
You need to start any path in life with a good focus and set goals. The goals need to be specific and measurable. Then you need to set a plan to achieve them.
Success is when preparation meets opportunity. You don’t know when your opportunities will appear – and when they do it will be too late to start preparing for them.
You need to plan ahead and then keep focussed; writing things down helps to clarify where you want to be headed. You can even make a poster for your wall.
lt takes many years for most people to be doing really well in life.
Masterpieces are not created over night. Anything that is built slowly is generally more likely to last.
You need to start with how you are – before you can successfully do what you want to do.
You need to go to bed early and get plenty of sleep. A woolly-headed person does not work well!
Healthy habits keep you going. You need a healthy body to get things done.
A good diet and lots of exercise should be daily habits. Being wise about money is a clever habit to pick up too. (Check out Blog Post 483)
Taking time out for rest and recreation, in order to ‘charge your batteries’, is important for your health as well. When your brain works hard, it needs rest and when you work your muscles hard, you need to rest them too to give them recovery time.
Don’t spend hours getting distracted by worthless, time-wasting activities.
Being able to concentrate for long periods of time gets a lot done. This is called doing deep work. Learning how to meditate helps you focus on any task that is important to you; so does keeping ‘to do’ lists and journaling your thoughts (writing or typing).
Solitude often helps you to connect with yourself and think more clearly.
Thinking before you do is good. Over thinking is not too good for you. lt is important to strike a balance.
Sometimes when you have done all the thinking you can do, it is time to launch forward and just go for it.
Read to expand your knowledge. Do things to improve your talents and skills.
Know exactly why you want your goals. This helps you move forward when things get tough.
You must have a powerful and inspiring ‘why’! Find your why.
Expect things to get tough. When they do, it won’t be a shock to you and you know you can get through to the other side. Life may have changed by then – there will be a new ‘normal’, but this is how life always is.
A lot of what is good in life comes to you after a battle. Just because something doesn’t come easily does not mean it is not for you to have.
lf you expect a battle and are prepared to fight through it, you can win. This is called having resilience.
Sometimes you can have a real down day and then the next day something really nice can happen out of the blue.
Can you grow from adversity; can you learn something through tough times about yourself and about life?
People who are upbeat and sure of themselves don’t tend to attract bullying.
Dream big, be prepared to work hard and take calculated risks. You cannot see all outcomes of every decision you make. lt is the same for everyone. Sometimes taking risks is really scary but later you will probably say ‘l am glad l did’, rather than ‘l wish l had’.
A lot of successful business people who carve their own path in life say that they used their intuition to make decisions. That means that if you feel a pressure inside yourself to do something but you can’t even explain why the feeling is there and it won’t go away, your heart is probably giving you correct guidance. Only time will show you that it was the right thing to do.
lf things don’t go well, you can change direction with new knowledge that you will get later.
Be grateful when something goes well and take time to dwell in that gratitude for a while before you move onwards and upwards.
Learn from people you admire. A lot of famous people have written books about their life. lf you read some of them you might be surprised at how long it took them to become successful, how many battles they had to fight and how many disappointments they had to endure. You only know them as a successful sports personality or actor; you didn’t see their life before that.
You need to work well with other people.
You have to meet other people that you can work well with. This is called networking. Networking means meeting with people and finding ways to communicate and work well with them.
Your computers at school might be networked too. So you can see what networking looks like.
When you think about how much time you spend at work, it is really important that you feel that it is worthwhile work and meaningful to you. You want it to make you happy. So it is important to pick a career that you really want to follow.
lf you don’t know exactly what you want to do, don’t worry. You could end up doing a job that you haven’t heard of yet. You might even end up doing a job that doesn’t exist yet! The world nowadays is fast-changing.
The kind of things you are good at in school could be an indication of where you are headed. Or maybe a hobby you love could turn into a career. On the other hand you might get really good at doing something you try when you are older like go-carting or sailing or designing textiles or debating (arguing a point of view).
Try new things that you have never experienced before, like acting or designing buildings or learning about astronomy.
Learning and planning in regard to a project is important; but then taking action afterwards is what gets results. Having dreams make you feel better about life but just dreaming won’t make them become reality.
lf you make a mistake, there is always a way to change direction. lf you don’t like your job you can retrain to do another one. You don’t have to worry that any decisions you make when you are young cannot be remade when you are older.
You will learn to keep correcting your course all through your life.
Don’t think that you have to have everything sorted out to be a successful adult by the time you leave school. A lot of young people do not realize this.
